Timeline
Our research requires multiple steps designed to further the goal of the team.
Sophomore Thesis Proposal
|
During the second half of our sophomore year, we will be writing and presenting our thesis to a committee consisting of our mentor, our librarian, the Gemstone Program Director, Associate Director and at least one expert on the topic of our research.
|
Gemstone Do Good Showcase
Fall 2019 |
Our team will be presenting our research and a progress report at this showcase in the beginning of our junior year. This will serve as a chance for the Gemstone staff, mentors and librarians to evaluate whether or not our team is on track to meet our research goals.
|
Undergraduate Research Day
Spring 2020 |
Undergraduate Research Day (URD) is an opportunity for our team to present our research and poster to the students and faculty that attend the event. We will also be using URD as practice for our senior thesis presentation and defense during Thesis Conference.
|
Thesis Conference
Spring 2021 |
Senior thesis conference is where our team will be presenting the results of our four years of research. We will be presenting to a panel of 3-5 experts on bio-desalination as well as a room full of students and faculty members. This event is the culmination of our Gemstone project.

Project Scope
Our research aims to discover a sustainable, relatively cheap method of bio-desalination that can be implemented at the individual, commercial and even industrial level. Our goal is to tackle the problem of water scarcity with a method that is accessible to the people and communities that need it, and one which produces as little waste as possible.
